About the course
This one-day, evidence-based programme is for doctors and midwives involved in assessing and managing childbirth-related perineal trauma, including third- and fourth-degree tears and obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASI). Hosted at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and supported by the RCOG, it combines expert teaching, surgical video demonstrations and supervised practical workshops using perineal trainers and animal tissue. Teaching covers pelvic floor and anal sphincter anatomy, prevention and classification of perineal trauma, repair techniques, persistent tears, faecal incontinence, the role of specialist trauma clinics and medicolegal considerations. Directed by Professor Swati Jha, the course has trained more than 1,500 doctors and midwives from the UK and internationally.
